Halley's Comet Pop-Up Book Patrick Moore & Heather Couper Deans International Publishing 1st edition 1985 From the rear of the book: "The most famous of all comets is on its way back to the Sun, and after 76 years, in 1985 and 1986 we have our once-in-a-lifetime sighting. The comet is named after Edmond Halley, an English astronomer who, observing it in 1682, realized it was the same as those seen in 1607 and 1531, and was the first correctly to predict its return, in 1758. But we know Halley's Comet has been seen since at least 240 B.C. and probably before then. It has certainly been reported since 87 B.C. This 1985-1986 visit is the most exciting ever, for space science has advanced so much that now one spaceprobe, the European `Giotto', to be launched in July 1985, will actually meet the comet head-on and enter the head, or coma. This spaceprobe is so-called after Giotto di Bondone, the Florentine painter who used the comet as a model for the Star of Bethlehem in `Adoration of the Magi'. It is hoped that before its almost inevitable destruction, Giotto will send back close-range pictures of the nucleus, and tell scientists more about its whereabouts in the head, and its size. Three other probes, two Russian and one Japanese, will pass within 10,000 km (the two Vega probes), and 200,000 km (the Japanese Planet A) of the comet. In this fascinating `Pop-Up' treatment, Patrick Moore and Heather Couper have conveyed their own intense enthusiasm and scholarship in the text; and Vic Duppa-Whyte's paper engineering shows the way the space probes will move about the comet, and the comet's orbit in relation to the Earth and the other planets. One spread even incorporates a pop-up `telescope' and a film strip, showing artist's impressions of points in the comet's progress. Other spreads show something of the comet's history, impressions of the nucleus, and the path of the comet over the next 76 years. This book really is to be an heirloom — for the next generation and the ones after that, who can beprepared for their sighting of Halley's Comet, next time around." 4to.
