Liverpool
is the city of my birth and I am justly proud that it has been awarded
this prestigious title. In August 1999 Liverpool announced that it
planned to bid for the title of European Capital of Culture in 2008.
In July 2000 Sir Bob Scott, the man who won the contest to stage the
Commonwealth Games in Manchester , was brought in to head Liverpool's
campaign and the Liverpool Culture Company was formed. In August the
culture company's board members were named with Peter Toyne, former
Liverpool John Moores University vice chancellor, becoming chairman.
In March 2001 the bid's official logo was revealed - a dancing Liverbird
on a dark blue background. In July 2001 the World in One City was
chosen to accompany the logo.
March
2002 saw a team from Liverpool Culture Company deliver a 75,000-word
bid document and promotional video to the Department for Culture,
Media and Sport and in May Liverpool's traditional rival Manchester
pledged its support
|
In
July the judging panel made its first visit , chaired by Channel
4 founder Sir Jeremy Isaacs, to assess Liverpool's claim. In October
Sir Bob and his team visited London to give a presentation to the
judges and in November Liverpool learned that it had been shortlisted
for the title along with Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Newcastle-Gateshead
and Oxford.
January2003
saw the launch of the Celebration of Learning year and in April
the Judges made their final visit to Liverpool.
In
May the Bid team visited the Department for Culture, Media and Sport
and on June 4 Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell announced Liverpool
had won.

Leading up to 2008, and beyond, Liverpool will be
having 'themed' years.
2004
FAITH IN ONE CITY
The centenary of the laying of the foundation stones of the Anglican Cathedral.
It will also be 150 years since the initial concept of building a Catholic
cathedral. The year will be marked by an inclusive programme of celebrating
our diverse citys many other faiths and religions. Particular emphasis
will be placed on involving the whole community, through a volunteer programme,
and promoting wider understanding of all faiths and cultures.
2005
SEA LIVERPOOL
Celebrating
Liverpool's maritme legacy. Key events for the year include The Mersey
River Festival, the round the world Clipper Race and the opening of the
Cruise Liner Terminal.
2006
YEAR OF PERFORMANCE
Celebrating
performance from the stage to field. Key events for the year include Liverpool's
3rd Biennial and the Open Golf tournament returns to the Royal Liverpool
at Hoylake for the first time in 38 years.
2007
HERITAGE
The citys 800th birthday. A spectacular year long birthday party
with hundreds of celebrations. A new history of the city will be published
as Liverpool looks back and forward to becoming European Capital
of Culture.
2009
CITY LIFE
There
will be no hangover as the city celebrates its beauty, elegance, cityscape,
parks, waterfront and streets. The citys environment will be celebrated
including a look at our natural heritage.
2010
CREATIVITY & INNOVATION
Liverpool
is renowned for its writers, directors, designers and entrepreneurs. In
the coming years there will be exciting developments in IT, digital technology
and new technological advances as yet undreamed of. Whatever they
are, we will celebrate them!
On
June 4th 2003, Secretary of State Tessa Jowell MP, announced the decision.
She proclaimed Liverpool a worthy winner and said that our
vision, passion and enthusiasm had won the city the title.
