Knitting is very conducive to thought. It is nice to knit a while, put down the needles, write a while, then take up the sock again. Dorothy Day

4to paperback 80pp VG++ 390 gms
(Order reference 6726).

Combing style with practicality, The Celtic Collection presents 25 exquisite patterns for men, women and children, by one of Britain's top~selling knitwear designers. This enticing selection of sweaters blends an array of yarns with beautiful shades that flow into one another and enhance the timeless Celtic motifs embedded in the designs.

Inspired by the intricate patterns and rich colours of Celtic manuscripts and stonework, the sweaters range from a casual Celtic oversize key jacket in soft muted colours, perfect for a mild autumn day, to a knotwork and diamond ‘Sloppy Joe’ classic in glowing jewel colours, ideal for a cool summer’s evening, or a cool and elegant Celtic key shirt for more sophisticated occasions.

The patterns draw on four distinctive knitting styles ~ Fair Isle, Fisher Gansy, Aran and Intarsia ~ and come complete with clear charts & instructions. Beautifully photographed on location in the west of Ireland by fashion photographer Mike Bunn, these glorious garments will inspire any enthusiastic knitter to take up their needles without delay.

Designer Yarns 1st 2003
4to paperback 42pp, v v min bmps o/w VG++ 215 gms
(Order reference 14854).

"My new collection of hand knit designs has been inspired by both the vibrant colours and textiles of
South America and North Africa and the soft pastel palette of the 195o's Riviera.

The designs have all been created in my new shades and yarns for Spring.
Cotton cashmere is a luxury double knitting weight blend which combines the finest cotton with the softest cashmere.
The sixteen colours range from the spicy burnt orange and terracotta shades to intense blues and ice cream pastels.

I have worked with the cotton cashmere to create contemporary classics, a soft draping jacket, body hugging shawl collared sweater and a baby's chevron patterned jacket.
The hot new shades in my existing wool/cotton and double knitting cotton ranges are used in a striped Inca cardigan, a multi-coloured Mexican jacket and a baby's embroidered tunic.

For those knitters who like to add an extra dimension to their knits, two designs have been embellished with beads or embroidery to create a truly individual look.
Whilst some of the colour patterned knits are more challenging there is still plenty of choice here for the new or less experienced knitter with simple stocking stitch designs."

Louisa Calder's Creative Crochet Calder, Louisa & Konior, Mary: Louisa Calder's Creative Crochet
Allen Lane 1st 1979
8vo, glazed pictorial boards F+ 370 gms
(Order reference 10119).

The craft of crochet is an old one, but the variations on it make it evergreen. Originally the simplest version of knitting, practised in different ways in different parts of the world, crochet has been given a new dimension by the freshness and flair of Louisa Calder’s designs.

Combining imaginative colours with simple stitches, Louisa Calder’s original and vivid patterns, for anything from buttons and belts to hats and wall hangings, show crochet as a tremendously vital and creative art. What is more, it is an art accessible to anyone.

This book opens up new vistas for both experienced crochet workers and complete beginners. With the detailed design instructions and the section on basic techniques, it is also an everyday handbook ~ but one that will fill an ordinary skill with life and colour.

  Harlow, Eve: The Art of Knitting - garments for today from patterns of the past
BCA 1977
large 4to, bumps to boards, small tears, wear + sunning to dustwrapper o/w VG+/VG+ 920 gms
(Order reference 10137).

The Art of Knitting is the exciting result of creative interaction between artists and designers. Nineteen leading Australian knitwear designers have chosen paintings by their favourite artists and adapted them to produce garments that are works of art in their own right.

The designers all responded enthusiastically to the painterly approach to knitting and have created the ultimate in luxury fashion wear, with sumptuous colours and gorgeous textures. Some of the resulting sweaters reflect the love of colour and freedom of form typical of this wide open continent, while others take a more subdued and formal approach. The designers explain how they have interpreted the artists' work, and how they have used colour, style and technique. There are full pattern and graph instructions as well. Yarns are suggested throughout, but by their very nature the garments are highly individual and the instructions can be adapted to suit personal preferences.

Beautifully photographed, The Art of Knitting is a work full of inspiration, and will provide every knitting enthusiast with a golden opportunity to make their own wearable art.

Machine and Hand Knitting - Pattern Design Kinder, Kathleen: Machine and Hand Knitting - Pattern Design
B T Batsford 1st 1990
4to, very very minor wear to edges of dustwrapper o/w F/VG++ 750 gms
(Order reference 11646).

For many years there has been a gap between hand and machine knitting, with hand knitting having a reputation for being more conservative and less adventurous. Today, as more and more knitters experiment with both types, there is a need to bridge the gap and also to give hand knitting a firm basis for future developments by introducing an internationally~recognised system of pattern notation. Kathleen Kinder does this by first exploring the history of pattern working in order to clear up any misunderstandings. Readers are then introduced to the concept of the pattern diagram, and to the Japanese system of pattern breakdowns. Hand knitters are shown that the principles of pattern design are the same for all knitting, of whatever kind.

Once explained, the system is demonstrated in practical chapters on exploring and mixing stitch patterns, on colour, design and the dropped shoulder line, on the fitted sleeve shape, on circular yokes and on bias knitting. These principles are demonstrated in ten sets of pattern instructions for complete garments, presented in the economical Japanese way.

Simple Knits for Easy Living Knight, Erika: Simple Knits for Easy Living
Collins & Brown 1st 2000
landscape format 4to paperback 128pp, slight wear to edges of covers, damage to head of spine o/w VG+ 625 gms
(Order reference 7710).

Highly textural and elegantly designed, knitted textiles are modern, adaptable and extremely comfortable. In this inspirational yet practical book, Erika Knight shows how to create exquisitely beautiful casual designs for the home. The elegant, understated sophistication of Erika's designs is matched by the restrained colour palette of the yarns: natural shades of ecru, graphite, indigo, heather and moss.

Starting with an introduction to basic knitting techniques, and using only natural yarns, bamboo needles and the easiest stitches, Simple Knits for Easy Living demonstrates photographically every element, from casting on to increasing and decreasing.

Using the simplest techniques, Erika has created a range of practical yet extremely attractive quick~to~knit textiles for the home, including cushions, throws, rugs, runners, bags and wraps. Many of the patterns are based on a plain square. All of them are within the grasp of a complete novice knitter and almost all of them could be completed in a weekend, if not in an evening.

For anyone who wants to give their house a contemporary look, and can spare the small amount of time to create these exceedingly easy textiles, Simple Knits for Easy Living is a godsend.

How worthwhile is knitting, bearing in mind the time it takes, the ease or difficulty of doing it, the pleasure it gives, what you may save or earn? What tools and machines can you use, what can they do, and how easy is it to use them? What yarns are there, should they be natural or man~made, and who supplies them? How can one overcome that bugbear of knitting ~ getting the correct tension? These are some of the topics discussed in this book, which provides a survey of knitting from the simplest of handknitted stitches to the most sophisticated of domestic knitting machines.

The emphasis is on encouraging the reader to explore modern techniques, and to make individual and original clothes, furnishings and wall hangings by the simplest and quickest methods. There are hints on easy ways of making~up to achieve a pleasing and harmonious garment, even if mistakes were made in the knitting process. In fact, the reader is encouraged to turn mistakes to advantage. Simple patterns are provided, designed for use in making a large, range of garments as well as to give the new knitter a sound basis for more advanced work.

The text is illustrated with clear line drawings showing how to work stitches and make patterns, and with photographs of machines, tools, knitted samples and completed garments.

Knit the Christmas Story Messent, Jan: Knit the Christmas Story
Burns & Oates/Search Press/Guild 1st 1987
square format stapled 4to paperback 64pp F 160 gms
(Order reference 9716).

From the introduction:
“The most important Christian festival is a time of coming together for families and groups, and what better way could one have than to share the joys of creating the Nativity scene, small enough to be manageable and large enough for all to have a hand in its making, from the older, more experienced knitter, to the youngest beginner.

The patterns are presented in a way which allows for individual interpretation, both of yarns and of stitch patterns, and the simple card figures are easily made from thick 'box card' which can be obtained quite easily. This is where those not so keen on taking part in the knitting activities can be of help. There is even a simple yarn-wrapping activity for young fingers, as the whole of the stable wall is covered in this way.

The knitted garments will provide many hours of enjoyment for those who create them. The materials needed are simple and inexpensive; it should be quite possible to provide all the requirements from home or school.”

Knit a Fantasy Story Messent, Jan: Knit a Fantasy Story
Search Press 1st 1989
large 4to F/F 640 gms
(Order reference 10714).

Knit a Fantasy Story will delight all those who love magic and makebelieve. There is no need for expensive tools. With oddments of yarn and materials, an active imagination and some patience, you can create your own three dimensional enchanted world of witches and wizards, fairies and goblins, bold knights on horseback, dragons, trolls, unicorns and a charming collection of farm animals.

Together with full colour photographs of the models and simple charts and diagrams, this book gives clear, comprehensive instructions on how to knit a village and farm, an enchanted castle, a forest of talking trees and all the inhabitants.

Although most of the knitting is on a small scale, the instructions are not complex. The actual shapes used for the body coverings and clothes are mostly based on rectangles or triangles, with little shaping. Even the castle is made from straight pieces of knitting and would be an excellent project for a group of people to make together. The tallest of the figures is approximately 5in (14cm) tall. The base of the village and farm is the size of a small rug and the castle rises 16in (41cm) to the tops of the pointed roofs.

There are hours of fun to be had creating the fantasy land and a wealth of enjoyment for the young and old alike.

Knitting from the British Islands Starmore, Alice & Matheson, Anne: Knitting from the British Islands - 30 original designs from traditional patterns
BCA 1983
4to F/VG++ 550 gms
(Order reference 12107).

A book of new, exclusive knitting patterns for all the family, inspired by traditional designs from the British coastline.

From Arans with their ancient Celtic symbols to intricate Fair Isles to fishermen's gansys, hand knitting has flourished in Britain for hundreds of years, and is a favourite of modern fashion.

Alice Starmore and Anne Matheson are sisters who grew up in the Outer Hebrides and have strong family links with the Scottish knitting heritage. For this book they have designed an exciting range of beautiful clothes - sweaters, dresses, jackets and much more. Taking traditional designs as their starting point they then interpret them in imaginative and inspiring new ways.

There is a rich variety of patterns to make based on all the major styles of British knitting including gansys, Fair Isle, Aran and Shetland Lace. Each one is illustrated in colour or black and white and has complete instructions and charts. Alice Starmore's text explains how the different knitting traditions developed - and the patterns themselves are excellent proof of how they continue to thrive.

Knitting from the Netherlands

van der Klift-Tellegen, Henriette: Knitting from the Netherlands - Traditional Dutch Fishermen's Sweaters
Dryad Press 1st UK 1987
square format 4to VG++/VG++ 455 gms
(Order reference 9848).

From the picturesque fishing villages of the Netherlands come the historic sweater designs collected for this treasury. The author spent three years travelling Holland's coastline, searching city archives and family albums for photographs of the classic fishermen's sweaters.

These patterns have never before been written down, but were part of an oral tradition passed from mother to daughter. With the advent of inexpensive machine-made sweaters it became unnecessary for women to take time to knit the traditional ones, and a beautiful part of the Dutch heritage was nearly lost.

The 40 patterns presented here were meticulously copied from historic photographs and have been reproduced in graph form, easy for the knitter to follow. Knitting instructions are given for all the traditional stitches, and photographs illustrate a knitted swatch of each.
This charming book is not just a superb collection of patterns and lore for the devotee of historic hand knitting, but also a fine pictorial tribute to one of Holland's loveliest - and least known - traditions.

  Wernhard, Hannelore Drawings and edited by Jan Messent: The Knitted Farmyard
Search Press reprint 1986
square format 4to stapled paperback 32pp VG++ 95 gms
(Order reference 9718).

From the introduction:

The knitted farmyard is created out of a mixture of knitting and crochet, although all the main pieces are knitted. The base is the size of a small rug, and would be ideal for a child's room, especially with the family figures and farm~animals which live on it in their buildings. Although it is quite a large task to make everything on the farm, the quantities of materials needed are quite small. Oddments of knitting yarns, rug~canvas and embroidery threads, terylene padding and pipe~cleaners are the main components.
