From the picturesque fishing villages of the Netherlands come the historic sweater designs collected for this treasury. The author spent three years travelling Holland's coastline, searching city archives and family albums for photographs of the classic fishermen's sweaters.

These patterns have never before been written down, but were part of an oral tradition passed from mother to daughter. With the advent of inexpensive machine-made sweaters it became unnecessary for women to take time to knit the traditional ones, and a beautiful part of the Dutch heritage was nearly lost.

The 40 patterns presented here were meticulously copied from historic photographs and have been reproduced in graph form, easy for the knitter to follow. Knitting instructions are given for all the traditional stitches, and photographs illustrate a knitted swatch of each.
